Sampo Hall, The little peewee hockey player that could!

Last weekend’s January 12-13, 2007 Peewee B tournament in Salmon Idaho was quite a challenge for the participating teams. Aside from the fact that the Salmon rink is outdoors (fully refrigerated but not covered), the Saturday morning temperature was a balmy -10f. The tournament, which took place in one of the Rocky Mountain’s most beautiful (and yet undiscovered) towns (population 3,100), was off the radar of many teams. However, Salmon put on a great event. When the frozen breath settled Salmon Beat Sun Valley in a shoot-out for the championship and Missoula beat Idaho Falls in sudden death overtime for third place.

One of the players who really shined at the tourney was Sampo Hall, one of Missoula’s youngest and smallest players. Sampo made his mark on the rink during the 3rd place game with Idaho Falls (IF) by contributing one of the most dramatic goals of the tournament. Jacob Beach, the tall and aggressive 12 year old center drove the puck deep into IF’s right corner, snuck a pass between the defender’s legs and hit Sampo’s stick on the tape. Sampo chopped the puck high into the net, out of the IF goalie’s reach. It was an incredible pass and a marvelous shot. I wish everyone could have been there to see the look on Sampo’s face. If smiles paid us dividends we all would be rich!

Sampo Hall, the “little peewee hockey player that could” has worked hard all season to keep up with the bigger, older players. To his credit, Sampo has worked his tail off to learn the game of hockey and make it on the Missoula Peewee B travel squad. It hasn’t been easy for the little forward. He has had to overcome the mental challenge of knowing kids on other teams “look down” on him. Also, skating, passing, puck-handling…all the basic skills have been skills he’s only just beginning to master. You never would have known it in the 3rd place game, though. With one top-shelf shot of the puck, Sampo, the little peewee player became Sampo, the hockey player that could! The Missoula team went wild after the goal went in the net. Every player on the Missoula team new how important Sampo’s goal was. This little guy made a big name for himself because, until this game, Missoula’s peewee B team had a “perfect record”…0 wins! Sampo helped his team win their FIRST game of the 2006-2007 season.

Congratulations, Sampo, your hard work and determination paid off in Salmon Idaho!
