Missoula Hockey in August?

Monday, January 22nd, 2007 by jim

Good news Missoula hockey fans! According to an article reported in the January 17, 2007 MISSOULIAN, “The Missoula County Fair commission agreed to have the Glacier Ice Rink’s indoor rink open and iced over for the 2007 fair.”  This opens the door this summer for Missoula Hockey to promote this wonderful game to Western Montana Fair attendees in August.

Hockey enthusiasts hope this will also make it easier for our Missoula Hockey teams to get an early jump on the 2007-2008 hockey season. As many players and coaches know, Missoula hockey teams usually have to wait until after August to get their season tryouts underway because the ice rink is closed throughout the summer months. This “early ice” should help our teams keep up with other teams in the state that form their rosters many weeks before ours.

The Missoula Maulers junior hockey team has reported it’s desire to play exhibition games during the Western Montana Fair. Assuming the Maulers have fielded their squad by this August, Missoula Hockey fans will be able to enjoy their first glimpse of the new team during “the fair”. How fun will it be to watch a rodeo, ride the zipper and then go cool off and watch a summer hockey game inside the Glacier Ice Rink all during the same day at the Western Montana Fair!

Missoula Maulers junior hockey team

Thursday, January 18th, 2007 by jim

After many years of talk about a junior hockey team moving to Missoula, it is finally happening. Get ready for the Missoula Maulers hockey team.

Missoula Maulers Hockey Team

The Missoula Maulers, Missoula’s new junior hockey franchise, plans to begin their first season in action September 2007. The Maulers will play junior hockey at Missoula’s Glacier Ice Rink, located on the grounds of the Missoula County Fair. The team is negotiating a league to play in at this time. They will most likely play regional teams around the northwest.

The Maulers are an amateur team. Players generally are High School and early college age looking for a break into the pro leagues. The team will be coached by Brad Swearingen, current Butte Roughriders coach. Brad has also coached the Helena Bighorns junior A team. Swearingen coaches clinics for USA Hockey during the off-season.

missoulahockey.net readers may be interested in hosting players, most of whom have “a life”, namely high-school studies along with their team commitments. You might want to check out the Mauler’s website if you are interested in this opportunity.

This website is dedicated to the stories of Missoula hockey players, so as this story unfolds we will be bringing you personal interest stories from inside the ranks of the Missoula Maulers. Keep checking back for more news and stories as we track the team’s progress and development as a part of Missoula Hockey.

Tennison Mathews scores game winner in Salmon, ID tournament

Monday, January 15th, 2007 by jim

Tennison Mathews, the youngest member of the Missoula Peewee B hockey team propelled his team to a new level this January 12-13th 2007 weekend at the Salmon, ID Peewee B tournament. In below zero weather all the teams at the tourney had to learn to deal with the cold weather and brittle ice at the outdoor hockey rink in Salmon. The small, but well supported tournament played host to three teams from Idaho, plus the Missoula team. Each team was guaranteed three games plus a slot in the finals. Missoula just missed a shot at the championship with a tie game against Sun-Valley and then a close loss to Idaho Falls in the third game of the tourney. So the team was determined to get revenge when they realized they would have to turn around and play Idaho Falls again 2 hours later for a shot at third place.

Tennison, the not-yet-eleven-year-old peewee, took it upon himself to end the game in Missoula’s favor in sudden-death overtime. With the score tied 4-4 at the end of regulation time, the teams squared off for a 5 minute period of sudden-death. At about 3 minutes into overtime, Mathews broke away from the pack towards the Idaho Falls goaltender. Tennison faked passing to his winger and shot a long, bouncing, dribbling puck on net just over the top of the goalie’s right pad and into the back of the net. SCORE! The team went crazy! The Missoula players jumped on top of Mathews. What a great way to end a frigid weekend in Salmon, Idaho.

Tennison Mathews secured third place for Missoula at the tourney. But more than that, his game winning goal was unique because until last Saturday the Missoula team had not won a single game during the 2006-2007 season. The drive home to Missoula was filled with good memories and great feelings about the team’s first win of the season!

Tennison Mathews, great job. You deserve to feel great about your performance this weekend!

Sampo Hall, The little peewee hockey player that could!

Monday, January 15th, 2007 by jim

Last weekend’s January 12-13, 2007 Peewee B tournament in Salmon Idaho was quite a challenge for the participating teams. Aside from the fact that the Salmon rink is outdoors (fully refrigerated but not covered), the Saturday morning temperature was a balmy -10f. The tournament, which took place in one of the Rocky Mountain’s most beautiful (and yet undiscovered) towns (population 3,100), was off the radar of many teams. However, Salmon put on a great event. When the frozen breath settled Salmon Beat Sun Valley in a shoot-out for the championship and Missoula beat Idaho Falls in sudden death overtime for third place.

One of the players who really shined at the tourney was Sampo Hall, one of Missoula’s youngest and smallest players. Sampo made his mark on the rink during the 3rd place game with Idaho Falls (IF) by contributing one of the most dramatic goals of the tournament. Jacob Beach, the tall and aggressive 12 year old center drove the puck deep into IF’s right corner, snuck a pass between the defender’s legs and hit Sampo’s stick on the tape. Sampo chopped the puck high into the net, out of the IF goalie’s reach. It was an incredible pass and a marvelous shot. I wish everyone could have been there to see the look on Sampo’s face. If smiles paid us dividends we all would be rich!

Sampo Hall, the “little peewee hockey player that could” has worked hard all season to keep up with the bigger, older players. To his credit, Sampo has worked his tail off to learn the game of hockey and make it on the Missoula Peewee B travel squad. It hasn’t been easy for the little forward. He has had to overcome the mental challenge of knowing kids on other teams “look down” on him. Also, skating, passing, puck-handling…all the basic skills have been skills he’s only just beginning to master. You never would have known it in the 3rd place game, though. With one top-shelf shot of the puck, Sampo, the little peewee player became Sampo, the hockey player that could! The Missoula team went wild after the goal went in the net. Every player on the Missoula team new how important Sampo’s goal was. This little guy made a big name for himself because, until this game, Missoula’s peewee B team had a “perfect record”…0 wins! Sampo helped his team win their FIRST game of the 2006-2007 season.

Congratulations, Sampo, your hard work and determination paid off in Salmon Idaho!
